Dry Mouth

Does your mouth feel dry and sticky when you awake in the mornings? If you need to drink a lot of water every day to keep your mouth moist, then you may be experiencing dry mouth. Most people do not associate dry mouth with cavities, however, with dry mouth your teeth can decay very rapidly. Another common side effect of dry mouth is bad breath.

Symptoms of dry mouth

  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing, and even speaking
  • Dry, sticky "cotton mouth" feeling
  • Dry lips and mouth sores
  • Burning sensation in mouth or on your tongue
  • Sticky mouth in the morning
  • Urge to drink water or suck on something constantly
  • Your tongue or mouth burns and / or your tongue is bright red
  • Chronic mouth or tongue sores

Tips to Control Dry Mouth

  • Drink lots of water that is close to room temperature.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after meals
  • Utilize products specifically designed for dry mouth such as mouthrinses and salivary substitutes.
  • Avoid mouth rinses that contain alcohol. though it may initially feel better, the alcohol will dry out your mouth further.
  • Avoid excessive caffeine because caffeine can dry out your mouth.
  • Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless candy to stimulate salivary flow.
  • Avoid foods and drinks with sugar or carbonation.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol because they both dry out your mouth and increase your susceptibility to gum disease/periodontitis.
  • Use a humidifier at night.
